From the super-rich collection of Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro and his son, Manuel
Gustavo, Bordallo Pinheiro has now revived a vase created in 1904, which is in the
permanent collection of the Ceramics Museum in Caldas da Rainha. The elegance
and formal innovation of this piece, “Jarra com Lagostas” [Vase with Lobsters],
was determinant in our decision to reproduce it. It combines the naturalism and
exuberance of Bordallo, but displays remarkable restraint in its design and
painting. With its geometric, pure and minimal lines, including the square design
of its handles and even the symmetry of its decorative elements, the “Jarra com
Lagostas” pre-dates modernism in Portugal. A Piece of the Year that is a creation
for all times.
